FMCSA Gives the Go-Ahead for Commercial Vehicle Window Tinting

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recently confirmed in a letter to the International Window Film Association (IWFA) that the federal government will begin allowing window tinting on commercial motor vehicles.

This is a reversal of precedent. For years, the trucking industry and enforcement entities have taken the position that window tinting should not be allowed on commercial vehicles. However, according to the agency, that enforcement was actually the opposite of what the regulations have stated—that trucks and other commercial vehicles are able to use clear window films that allow at least 70 percent of their normal light to be transmitted through the glass.

Therefore, if owner-operators or commercial vehicle companies have encountered any situations in which they were told window tinting was not acceptable or allowable, they have the right to contact the Office of Enforcement and Compliance at the FMCSA to make sure they’re able to continue using their window tinting in accordance with regulations.

Why window tinting is so beneficial for drivers

Why is this such a big deal for people in the trucking industry and for drivers of other types of commercial vehicles? Here are just a few examples from a window tint company in Birmingham, AL of some of the biggest benefits associated with automotive window tinting:

  • Reduced heat: Window tinting can help you to significantly reduce the heat in your car, which is especially beneficial on warm, summer days here in the south. It blocks out some of the transmission of UV rays into the vehicle, which prevents the air from getting warmer.
  • Blocking UV rays: Constant direct exposure to sunlight can result in some major skin problems thanks to the presence of harmful ultraviolet rays in that light. Even if you’re inside your vehicle, you can still get sunburned through your windows if they’re unprotected. Window tinting helps to block these UV rays, meaning people who spend a significant amount of time behind the wheel don’t have to worry about getting sunburned. This means greater protection against conditions such as skin cancer that can arise from UV exposure.
  • Stronger glass: While glass strengthening isn’t the main reason you’re likely to seek out window tinting, it is certainly an extra benefit. Window tinting adds some extra strength to your windows, which can help guard against intruders. It also prevents glass from shattering if you get into an accident, which can help to keep you safer in such a scenario.
  • Increased privacy: Tinted windows add a little bit of privacy to your vehicle, and prevent others from staring in and watching what you’re doing. While there are industry limits to how dark you can go with your tint, it can still at least help to give you a little more privacy than you’d otherwise have.
